The morning session consisted of two presentations given by PC Simon Collister, Police Liaison Officer and Anna Charles-Jones, Learning Support Advisor at MMU.

The afternoon session began with Regional Updates, followed by the business meeting.

We are pleased to invite you to the ASRA South East Regional Meeting, the location and date of which is shown above. Following the success at the 2007 Annual Conference, we will be joined at our meeting by Dr Darren Smith and Dr Richard Tyler, with their session ‘Students in the Community: Studentification’. 
 

‘Students in the Community’ and ‘Studentification’ are in fact two alternative models of the relation between students and communities.  The former is not problematic, but the latter is deeply problematic, especially for the communities concerned.  The problems take a variety of forms, both structural (demographic) and functional (social, environmental, economic), as well as impacting on the overall well-being of residents.  Solutions are available.  They depend on key principles (of co-ordination).  They entail joined-up management, housing measures, and planning policies.  And they depend on pro-active engagement by key stakeholders (including HEIs).

The presentation focuses on the complexities of studentification, and identifies examples of good practice to address the challenges and nurture some of the benefits which are linked to growing concentrations of students.  The discussion draws upon findings from the UK, Ireland, Australia and Canada.  It is suggested that a series of new challenges and opportunities are unfolding, in light of the proliferation of purpose-built student accommodation.

The cost of the day including lunch will be £18.00. We would be most grateful to receive your reply slip including a cheque made payable to ASRA by 25th May 2007. Following the postponement of the meeting in November, the South West regional meeting has now been rearranged for Friday 18th January 2008.

The meeting will take place at Holland Hall, University of Exeter and the morning session will include Managing Accommodation Expectations led by Helen Weighell from London Met.

The next Regional Meeting for South West Region will be held at University of Reading, Black Horse House, Whiteknights, Reading RG6 6AQ on Wednesday 23rd May 2007.

The first part of the morning session will concentrate on Students and the Environment (Speaker to be confirmed) and at the request of the members the second part of the morning will be a discussion on UUK Code of Practice and how it is being put into effect at your institution.

After lunch, the business meeting will be held and questions for discussion can be forwarded to the Regional Rep in advance.
