ASRA's Jordan Meates joins National Commission

By ASRAcomms 11 May 2022

As reported previously, Unite Students has launched a national commission to support the higher education and private student accommodation sectors’ response to its recently published Living Black at University report

The commission, convened and supported by Unite Students, will be chaired by Professor Iyiola Solanke, who is Professor of European Union Law and Social Justice and Dean of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Leeds. She is also the founder of the Black Female Professors Forum.

Joining her are Commissioners drawn from key national organisations including Unipol, Advance HE and Student Minds, and professional bodies including ASRA, CUBO and AMOSSHE.

Jordan Meates, ASRA Communications & IT Officer and Campus Services Manager at Sheffield Hallam University will be representing ASRA on the Commission.

Jordan said;

I’m incredibly proud and privileged to be a part of the national commission created by Unite Students. I’m looking forward to working with colleagues in the sector at both national and local levels to improve the experience for Black students living in UK student accommodation and genuinely making a difference.

Make no mistake, the Living Black at University Report serves as uncomfortable reading, especially in a sector that frequently brings together students from all backgrounds and walks of life in a residential setting. Nevertheless, it shows that more work is needed, and highlights the need for everyone involved in the provision of student accommodation to commit to action. Success to me would be implementing evidence-based decisions via the recommendations in the report through a dedicated, collective, and continuous multi-agency approach.

I'm looking forward to working with Professor Solanke, The Commission, and our fantastic ASRA members to deliver real, tangible, and lasting change.
