What do you enjoy most about working in student accommodation?

I find real fulfilment in supporting students and contributing to their personal growth! Working in student accommodation really does offer a unique opportunity to be part of their journey, not just in terms of housing, but in helping them develop essential life skills and meaningful experiences. It’s amazing how the variety in each day keeps things exciting and impactful. You’re creating a space where students can feel empowered to thrive, and that’s something truly special.

Can you provide details about a specific student accommodation project that you’ve been involved in, that you’re really proud of?

Being part of the Change Agent community at Unite Students has given me the opportunity to provide feedback and support teams through the change process. Change can be difficult, so helping staff navigate new systems ensures they’re empowered to support students effectively and efficiently. The support with change is contributing to a smoother, more streamlined experience for both students and staff, which is a significant achievement in improving the overall accommodation experience.

What does ASRA mean to you?

Being part of a network like ASRA offers a fantastic opportunity to connect with like-minded professionals, share insights, and collaborate on best practices. The training and development opportunities ASRA provides can really enhance your skills and open up doors to new professional growth and networking opportunities. It’s great that ASRA can help you expand both your knowledge and your professional connections!

Thoughts on the future of accommodation?

The future of student accommodation faces significant challenges, particularly with the rising cost of living and stagnant student loans. This financial pressure makes it even more important to create accessible and affordable housing options for students from all backgrounds, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, has the opportunity to have a fulfilling university experience.

Alongside the financial challenge, the rise in mental health concerns is another critical issue. Having a strong support network in student accommodation—whether it’s through access to counselling services, peer support groups, or programs that encourage social connection—will be crucial for helping students thrive. A focus on creating safe, inclusive, and supportive environments will be essential not just for students' academic success, but for their overall well-being.
